Monthly salary credit

Monthly salary credit is the SSS bracket used to compute contributions and many benefits. It is not the person’s exact monthly basic. Payroll assigns an MSC from a table.

Also called MSC

How it works

RA 11199 set a minimum and maximum MSC that moved across the phase-in years and landed at a ₱5,000 floor and ₱35,000 ceiling in the 2025 step. Pay ₱70,000 and the SSS line still uses ₱35,000. Pay ₱8,000 and the table, not your arithmetic, picks the credit. Benefits such as sickness and the maternity reimbursement formula also lean on salary credits, sometimes with their own circular quirks. When you model loaded cost, cap the SSS employer share. Do not apply 10% to uncapped gross.

Example: basic ₱50,000, MSC ₱35,000. Employer 10% is ₱3,500, not ₱5,000. The ₱1,500 gap is the cap doing its job.

How it differs

PhilHealth uses monthly basic with a different floor and ceiling. Pag-IBIG uses fund salary with a ₱10,000 cap. Mixing the three bases is the usual spreadsheet error.

Common errors

Spreading SSS as 10% of USD offer. Changing MSC by hand to shrink the contribution.

In practice

Treat Monthly salary credit as a week-one operating object. Look at the next peso payslip and the next remittance file. If this word does not show up there, the quote from the sales call is incomplete. Write an owner - founder, local employer, or worker - and a date you will look at it again: first cutoff, first holiday, or first miss. If nobody can show a contract clause, a payslip line, a calendar block, or a checklist box, you do not have monthly salary credit yet. You have a conversation. Convert the conversation before the person starts, while changing the deal still costs a paragraph rather than a resignation. Re-read the worked example above against the actual hire in front of you. If the numbers in that example cannot be swapped for this seat’s pesos, hours, and start date, the brief is still unfinished.
